Hot Toddies Jazz Band: Triple Step
by George Harris

Danceable, two stepping and hot swing is delivered by two sizzling ladies at the mic in Hannah Gill and Queen Esther, as they trade off together as well as taking time to do their own work on this toe tapping foot stomper of a session…”

THE NEW YORK SUN

FEATURE & ALBUM REVIEW:
With Vocal Music for Dancing Back in Vogue, It’s a Big Season for Hannah Gill - by Will Friedwald
Nov 16 , 2023

“The Hot Toddies album is highly recommended… there’s no law against against dancing and listening at the same time.”

“Even though Gill is 26, I’ve been hearing her around New York for a few years now, both live and on recordings. She has her debut album out, and also features prominently with The Hot Toddies Jazz Band”

“The Hot Toddies also offer the best chance to hear Ms. Gill live, in that she sings with them most Wednesdays in Chelsea at Somewhere/Nowhere. The Hot Toddies album is also highly recommended for the singing of Queen Esther on three tracks and standout violinist Gabe Terracciano on “I Wanna Be Like You,” declaiming in no uncertain terms that he wants to be like Louis Prima.”

“Between her own album and the appearances with The Hot Toddies, Hannah Gill has truly arrived. There’s no law against dancing and listening at the same time.”

JAZZ JOURNAL (UK)

ALBUM REVIEW:
The Hot Toddies Jazz Band
October 24, 2023

“Headed by spirited vocals, the group’s upbeat rhythm and entertaining style ideally suit live venues and dancing. In addition, the fresh well-planned arrangements and efficient solos reward attentive listening…”

“Most vocals are covered by Hannah Gill and Queen Esther, differing in style but both assured and warmly expressive. Co-leader and drummer Patrick Soluri is secure at the helm in a well-integrated rhythm team, with significant contributions on guitar and vocals from the versatile Justin Poindexter. In a field of capable soloists, seasoned veterans trombonist Ron Wilkins and reedsman Dan Levinson stand out. Wilkins’ very feisty style, together with trumpeter Alphonse Horne’s growling trumpet (think Hot Lips Page) combine with Poindexter’s wailing guitar to boost exciting ride-outs to Kansas City and Saint Louis Blues, making an effective R&B insert to the varied repertoire.”

ALBUM RELEASE CONCERT REVIEW:
The Hot Toddies Jazz Band
August 18, 2023

(4.5 out of 5 stars)

“The Hot Toddies play with a sinuous synchronicity that creates a sound that is from both yesterday and today. Simple in their tempo and tone, deep and complicated in overall musicality…”

“Debuting at number 11 on the jazz chart, with an 11 tune mix to both listen and dance to, The Hot Toddies bring their brand of jazz and swing to the world with their album release of The Hot Toddies Jazz Band.

To celebrate this, they had a release party last Wednesday at the club Somewhere Nowhere that was nothing but fun. Everything about it, the gorgeous space situated on the 38th floor with spectacular views, the design of the club, the drinks and nosh afforded by the kitchen and bar, but especially the crowd enjoying the musicians, who in turn were enjoying themselves to the enth degree in sharing their brand of jazz. A jazz of joy…”

THE EAR: Hi Fi Music

ALBUM REVIEW:
The Hot Toddies Jazz Band
July 6, 2023

“The Hot Toddies Jazz Band album is a merry romp from its first to last note, if this music doesn’t put a smile on your lips and jive in your step, check and make sure your pulse is still intact. Very highly recommended to anybody who wants to hear the classic jazz styles before Be Bop took over that world and made everything serious.

The recording is very good, portraying the scale of the very large space required to accommodate such a vast number of musicians. The sound stage is deep and extends beyond the speakers left and right edges.

The musicianship, as expected given the vast experience of the players, is exemplary. Whether the band is busy serving western swing, swing, blues or Charleston era tunes, they sound fab. There is a sense that the various people involved in getting this effort of the ground are all steeped in the music and that this is a labour of joy and love to the music and culture it represents.”

NIGHTLIFE EXCHANGE

ALBUM REVIEW:
The Hot Toddies Jazz Band
August 7, 2023

The Hot Toddies Jazz Band (Prohibition Productions) is the group’s debut album. It celebrates the array of swinging vocal and big band numbers of the Prohibition Era inspired by singers and composers such as Duke Ellington, Billy Holiday, Count Basie and more. Founded in 2018, the Hot Toddies Jazz Band is led by Grammy-nominated violinist Gabe Terracciano and composer/producer/drummer Patrick Soluri. The band features some of today’s notable musicians in the swing and jazz worlds who offer numbers such as “Digga Digga Doo,” which was first recorded in 1928 by Duke Ellington and his Orchestra. The oldest track, William C. Handy’s 1914 hit “Saint Louis Blues,” follows the album’s only original work: “Kilowatt Stomp” by Terracciano. The music is geared towards swing dancing, but with influences of bluegrass, Americana, classic rock and even classical music.

OUR TOWN / WEST SIDE SPIRIT

INTERVIEW:
Composer, Drummer & Producer, Patrick Soluri leads a Hot Swing Band

July 6, 2023

The Upper West Side resident and Hot Toddies band leader, Patrick Soluri grew up in the East and West Villages and first started throwing swing parites in his apartment in Louisville. Soluri expounds on the origin of his hot band, jazz and the perils of tossing swing parties in your own apartment.

Upper West Sider Patrick Soluri’s swing band the Hot Toddies started to come together just before the pandemic hit. While in quarantine, the group grew by getting creative, and released a six-song album and accompanying music videos, both remotely and then in-person as the city began opening up.

On July 28, the band will release its first full-length album, which Soluri, who grew up in the East and West Villages, produced himself. Besides his work with the band, the Manhattan School of Music alum, who has done 11 commissioned ballet scores, has an impressive resume, which includes producing live swing and jazz music events with his company Prohibition Productions. In 2017, through a jazz camp for adults that he attended, he met Grammy-nominated musician Gabe Terracciano, and they co-founded the Hot Toddies together.
